Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports
Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- April 2010
Spring is in the air here in Ft. Lauderdale and fishing
is changing for the better. We have already seen sea birds starting their
trek north and with our warmer weather, expecting the sea temperature to be
on the rise. Warmer waters mean migrating fish and that’s what we depend on
here in Ft. Lauderdale when it comes to catching fish!
Smoker Kingfish have already begun showing up. These
fish are much larger than the ones we catch in the summer. Most are in the
20 to 40lbs range and are a blast to catch on the lighter tackle used for
kite fishing. Not as good to eat as their smaller brothers, they get a
little oily when they get to this size.
The last few days have had some good Sailfish action as
well. We’ve caught 2 Sailfish on the “troll” and expect more of the same for
the next 6 to 8 weeks.
Mahi
mahi also have started to show sporadically. Some minis along with a few
small gaffers. Dolphin fishing will improve in the next few months with most
of our biggest Dolphin being taken in this time period.
Occasional Cobia will be exiting soon as will the
Amberjack population on the deeper wrecks and reefs. While these fish can be
caught all year long, this time of year is their strongest and they have
provided many a trip with entertainment because of their weight to fight
ratio. A tough battle for those wishing to test their strength.
Sharks are also quite predominant right now. The big
pregnant Hammerhead females are in our area right now. Catch and release is
a must because each shark is carrying between 30 and 40 pups. Some of the
smaller males are also in the area as well as other species of sharks. The
real question is… “Do you really
want to do this”? Most fights last for more than 40 minutes and sometimes
can go hours.
April in Ft. Lauderdale is the beginning of a great
time to be here fishing. May gets even better!
See you soon. Tight lines.
