Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing/ August As we enter August here in Fort Lauderdale, deep sea fishing can be expected to change some. While Kingfish and Bonito will frequent the reef area, August is probably one of our hottest month’s temperature wise. With the sun strong beating down, it heats the top 5’ or so of the surface of the water making a thermocline, a barrier of sorts of temperature change. This thermocline can be as much as 5 degrees and that’s a serious change for a cold blooded fish. They feel it when they pass through it and… That temperature change causes a blurry vision problem, almost like someone smeared Vaseline on a piece of glass when you look through it. For this reason, other than the very early or late part of the day, most hits come from below on the deep rods.
Our past years recently have shown change in the fish’s migration, mostly in the Mahi-mahi. While we use to catch these from May through July, the last few years have had them in our area much later beginning in August. September and October were also excellent for these fish. Sailfish numbers will diminish but a few will still be caught. The same goes for sharks, always present but not in the numbers they are in the winter. August can also be a great time for daytime drops for Swordfish off shore in deeper water. While out in the deep, the chance of a Blue Marlin or Mahi’s coming by is excellent! Wahoo as well as Barracuda can also be caught. So, what can you expect if you’re deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale with us in August? To catch some fish and have some fun doing it! Capt.
