Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports
Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- December 2009
Fishing in
Ft.
Lauderdale
in the month of December can be some of the year’s best Sailfish action.
Depending on when the cold fronts come through determines when the fish
move. An early winder for most of you spells cold weather up north and some
great fishing here in south Florida.
While the month of November requires
the choice to be made as to troll or use live bait, December is pretty much
all live bait fishing, whether in the kites or being trolled from the
riggers. Looking for “tailers” (free swimming Sailfish) or free jumpers
(Sailfish just jumping for no apparent reason) can be the key to success.
Usually, these fish are swimming in groups and just being close can offer a
multitude of bites from one group passing by. This time of year, the term
“covered up”, meaning every or almost every bait in the water gets a bite is
not uncommon.
While Sailfish is the main target,
other fish will bite as well. Dolphin visit on a limited basis, as do Tuna.
Kingfish are more frequent and can become pests if they are small and just
chop the baits in half, not to return to finish the meal. And as we wait for
the next group of Sails to come by, predators begin to show in small to
large sized sharks.
The smaller sharks are just perfect
specimen’s of their larger brothers and much easier to handle. The larger
fish are usually hooked on the lighter gear and sometimes can be a handful
on that tackle. Many have been fought over 2 hours only to loose them not
far from the boat. It takes patience to get one of these “sea monsters” to
the boat on the light tackle we use for the Sails.
As we enter the holiday season, we
want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas
and a prosperous and Happy New Year.
