Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Forecast/ February 2011
Fishing in Fort Lauderdale during the month of February
is the toughest of all months to predict. I’ve made it a little easier on
myself by being tardy in writing this forecast and already have inside
knowledge as to what is going on.

Everything this time of year depends on what the
weather has done so far. 2011 has been a cold year and therefore pushed the
fish into moving south. With that said, we still haven’t had any great days
of the Sailfish swarm as we have in the past. Usually north winds and cold
weather will have them “tailing” down sea in the swells that form. Days when
double digit Sails are caught just hasn’t been the case yet this year. Will
a few days in February be when this occurs this year? Only time will tell.
What has been going on is some excellent fishing for
small Blackfin Tuna. This has been some of the best I have ever seen. Most
the fish are small but excellent fighters with a few larger ones mixed in.
And with the Tuna present, we have also had quite a bit of early Shark
activity. Sharks are traditionally not here in these numbers until March but
this year they have come early. Already some big Hammerheads have shown up
along with some of the more exotic Sharks like Tigers, Makos and Threshers
as well. It’s not often we see this kind of Shark activity so early in the
winter.
Our usual small Kingfish run which normally happens in
February has not yet started. And we are still catching the occasional
Dolphin here and there, with some nice Wahoo mixed in with good measure
following those small Tuna I mentioned.
Yes, this year Forecasting has been made easier. I
might make this a practice!

Maybe the weather service should try this!
