Ft. Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Reports
Ft Lauderdale Offshore Fishing Report- March 2009
March has arrived and as expected the fishing
opportunities for those wishing to try their luck at Ft Lauderdale Charter
Fishing has risen dramatically.
Thru the third week King Mackerel fishing (with the exception of the full
moon) has on most days been a gimmie. Virtually every day has offered enough
keeper sized Kings to meet the Federal bag limit.
As is the norm these fish
are being taken inside of 150 feet, or about a mile offshore. These Kingfish
are a sure bet on live bait, but are easily taken trolling when they are
here in such numbers.
There is also good fishing for Wahoo just off the edge of the outside reef.
The majority will be taken by trolling, but a live "bullet" Bonito is
chocolate cake to these Wahoo if you can stay outside the Kingfish.
There are increasing
numbers of Dolphin being taken almost daily. Many are being taken by
trollers and also live-baiters on or just offshore of the reef line. Any day
now we should begin to experience large schools of fast moving dolphin as
they pass thru the area. These fish are on the move and will on many days
show little interest in floating objects that are so much the focus of
Dolphin efforts as we get into the summer. As always floating objects are
certainly worth a look, but many fish will stay on the move, even to the
point of abandoning a hooked companion at boat side and continuing
on(something seldom seem in the later summer months). These schools often
hold large numbers of fish of the same approximate size. These fish are
often fairly near shore in less than 800 feet and even the slightest edge or
an area of widely scattered weed can produce the opportunity to intercept
these fish. Prepared experienced crews will be successful here and post
impressive catches in comparison to those with less exposure to these often
finicky early season fish.
While the Sailfish
presence has diminished some, there are still a few around. They are being
caught on both trolling and live bait and the fishing for these prized fish
will improve in the next few weeks as they begin their journey north through
our area again.
And for those that want to pull on something REALLY big…
Sharks of a
multitude of species have been biting on days when the conditions are right.
Hammerheads are the main shark we catch here off
Fort Lauderdale,
but Bull, Sandbar, Thresher, Mako, Dusky and Tiger sharks are also present
and possible. These predators will be more prominent in the weeks to come.
