Kids love fishing and catching fish here with us in Fort Lauderdale and at times, sharks are involved. That was the case today with Luke, age 9, his dad Mike and grandparents Leon and Barbara.

Fishing has been erratic as of late, changing dramatically from one day to the next. Today with our group on board, we were catching a few Mahi?s but it wasn?t red hot. Luke was very excited about all this and enjoyed each fish boated.

When things got slow, we decided to try some live bait with a shark bait added in. Some small Silky and Blacktip sharks had been around, perfect size for a 9 year old. The problem is, you just never know what will bite your bait and we got more fish than we bargained for.

I can only guess that we had a Bull or maybe a Sandbar shark on the line. Whatever it was, it was bigger than Luke could handle. His dad helped as much as he could and finally Luke gave in and Mike hopped in the chair to finish off the catch. Unfortunately, the fish finished the battle first and got away before we ever saw what it was. While this is always disappointing, it weighs heavily on a 9 year old.

It took a bit of talking to get Luke out of his funk and another fish boated changed him back to smiles. That?s the thing about fishing? Sometimes the fish win! Even with kids fishing for sharks here in Fort Lauderdale.
