Our fishing charters in Fort Lauderdale have produced some really nice fish for our anglers. Kingfish are of decent size and have begun biting well on both morning and afternoon trips. Mahi have begun to show further offshore as we spoke in our previous report and there are some sailfish moving through our area.
We found those nice sized Mahi-mahi in the lead photo on a weed line in 775 feet today. That nice King was inshore on the reefs. We caught other smaller ones in that same areas. Quite a bit of weed there that was holding very little bait but the Mahi- Mahi were moving down it despite the almost total lack of bait. The fish here today on that weed line were hungry and aggressive, most likely due to that lack of bait in the area. We set two marlin lures in the spread along with two teaser baits in this same weedy area but had no chances. It looked better to us apparently than it did to them, but we will certainly try them again in the near future.
Good sized Kingfish the last several days in water from 80 to 120 feet and there are some Bonito mixed in. This action is mostly all on trolled deep planer rod with little activity on the surface lines.
A number of Sailfish moving through and are and showing themselves by free jumping as they work their way to the south. These are big full grown fish this time of year with many of the largest ones of the year being caught in April and May.
And of course it’s not just about the big anglers. 8 year old Jacob in that picture with this report caught over 20 of those small Yellowtail Snappers on 4 # test on an afternoon charter with his mom and dad. Spanked his dad by over 20 to 1 with a good touch on the spinning rods, but his dad did catch a fine fat Tripletail that filleted nicely for an evening dinner at the waterfront restaurant just down the street. Fun charter for JJ and myself too.
A little cooler now as the frontal system that passed through late today took down the 9 degree high earlier in the day. It was surprisingly comfortable off shore with a decent southeast wind taking the edge off and our anglers enjoyed the sun and spent very little time inside in the A/C.
Tight lines and good fishing from all of us here aboard the Marlin my Darlin. See you on the rip. JJ, Matt, Tommy K and JJ.
