As we head toward the end of April we continue to see reasonable action on our fishing charters in Ft. Lauderdale. The weather has been warm with only an occasional shower. The north current that we like to see is pushing down the reefs and the water over those reefs has on most days been clear. Clear in color, not clear of weeds as the continued abundance of seaweed in our area has got extremely large amounts of this weed not only on the reefs but also offshore. Mahi love the weeds and we of course wish there were more of them in our area to enjoy all this weed, but that fishing remains on the slow side with only scattered fish midst despite all that weed, but we have managed some with 700 to 900 feet being where we have found them over the week or so. The better news is that there have been Kings, Tuna and some Wahoo biting.
We are seeing the Kings on both our morning and afternoon charters with these fish hugging the edges of the reef and prefering water less that 120 feet. Constantly clearing the weeds from the lines has got the mates working hard tending the lines but most days their efforts to keep the baits clean and attractive have paid off. Summer means Bonito and those False Albacore have been large and aggressive in taking baits. Good sized schools of these fish and they have been just off the reefs in 130 to 200 in addition to being a bit closer to shore and mixed in with the Kings.
Blackfin Tuna in water mostly from 120 to 300 feet in depth. Bites possible any time of day but often they bite well late. These fish really love current and we have seen them in blue as well as greenish colored water. Wahoo in those depths too and taking baits fished on the deep trolled braided lines fished with planers or trolling leads. No really large ones but certainly opportunities at nice fish.
