**Fishing Report: Fort Lauderdale Aboard Marlin My Darlin – Week of 8/27/24**
Summertime fishing continues to be red hot! Offshore, everything seems to be biting, making it a perfect time to wrap up summer with an unforgettable fishing trip. Here’s the latest update from aboard the Marlin My Darlin:
Offshore Fishing: Mahi-mahi fishing has been productive. While there are plenty of smaller fish, we’ve also encountered some sizable schools recently, with a few decent-sized mahi mixed in. This time of year, hurricanes often bring along floating debris, enhancing mahi-mahi fishing consistency.
Reef Fishing: Trolling along the reef has been outstanding. We’ve had large catches of king mackerel, bonitos, and blackfin tunas. The fishing has been the most consistent we’ve seen all summer. We’ve also hooked a few larger wahoos and even a couple of sailfish. These fish are mostly caught by trolling along the reef with planers, spoons, strips, and ballyhoos for rigger baits, in water depths ranging from 70 to 400 feet.
Bottom/Wreck Fishing: Over the past couple of weeks, there’s been a noticeable increase in catches of snappers, groupers, amberjacks, tilefish, and blackbelly rosefish. Most of these fish are caught by dropping chunks of squid or live baits to the bottom, especially around shipwrecks and specific reef spots. This technique is effective at depths between 100 and 350 feet, particularly on days with minimal current and favorable conditions.
Swordfishing: Swordfishing remains strong as we head into the season. While we look forward to the larger catches typically seen in winter, we’re currently catching swordfish from depths of 1,500 to 2,000 feet. Due to the challenging nature of reeling from such depths, we use electric reels during the day.
